A Bit of History...
They say "home is where your heart is."
Jesse grew up in Choteau, and Rose in Conrad, (40 miles north of Choteau). We were high school sweethearts that married and moved away for 21 years to live in Wyoming. But we always considered Choteau our home.
At a young age Jesse’s mom had him cooking complete meals, as she didn’t want her son to have to rely on a woman to cook for him. His favorite meal to cook was “rabbit” stew, made with hamburger instead of rabbit. He wanted to go to culinary school, but his dad talked him into welding school instead. He was a welder for a very short time in Montana, then the job market took us to Wyoming. Jesse took employment in the oilfields. While working in oil industry, Jesse was fortunate to have worked with many people of various nationalities which allowed him to learn about cooking techniques and recipes from all over the world, many that are used in the restaurant today. Some of Jesse’s hobbies include hiking, hunting, fishing, and making log furniture.
Rose's previous experiences in the retail industry have given her the tools to efficiently manage the restaurant. Her biggest job is, however, making sure Jesse isn't constantly giving the wait staff a hard time! Rose takes an active part in satisfying the sweet tooth of the restaurant patrons. She handles all of the deserts...most of which are homemade and include a wide range of fruit and cream pies, as well as specialties such as pineapple upside down cake and bread pudding with rum sauce. It's important to note that only real whipped cream is used as a topping on Rose's deserts! Rose is an archery champion, including State Champion titles in 2004 and 2005, while being sponsored by Vegas Targets. Rose applies the same precision found in archery to her other passion: quilting. If you look around the restaurant, you will often find her quilts and wall hangings on display...be sure to look for them!
A common hobby for us is our love of Dutch oven cooking and Dutch oven competitions. We've even won a few competitions and most recently, we placed third in a chili cook-off!
When you stop in, ask us to share how our faith in God was so instrumental in our move back to the place we call home.
Special Events at Our Restaurant
Sharing time with family and friends is one of our greatest joys in life. In our restaurant, we try to make the atmosphere as comfortable and inviting as possible. Below you will learn about some of the special events that we coordinate to hopefully make your dining experience with us enjoyable, unique and memorable.
Thanksgiving Day Meal
Long before we actually opened the doors to our
restaurant, we planned to provide a special, donation-only Thanksgiving Day meal. We put it together for the first time in 2007, and offered it again in 2008. Both times, it was a phenomenal success! A large portion of the food is donated by local townsfolk and organizations, and our food distributors chip in as well. We are also blessed with cash donations from those who want to help, but are unable to provide food or volunteer their time. With assistance from the county sanitarian, we train local volunteers to serve the meal. It absolutely boggles the mind to have more
volunteers than we can accommodate! The people in this community are so generous with their time and energy...it is truly a special occasion when we can all come together to give thanks and celebrate our good fortunes. Those who come to dine with us on Thanksgiving Day include people who can’t afford a lot, some don’t
have family locally, and a few people traveling that just stop
in for a bite to eat and what a wonderful surprise for them to learn that their holiday meal is free of charge! We plan to offer this special holiday meal on a yearly basis. If you'd like to assist us with this event by donating funds, foodstuffs, or effort, please contact us!
Fiddlers Update!
Due to "licensing issues" we have postponed
our fiddler performances.
A regular event at our restaurant is evening entertainment provided by a local group of fiddlers. In 2009, they will come to the restaurant six times. Here are the dates so you can mark them on your calendar: February 21st, March 28th, April 25th, May 25th September 5th, and October 24th. The fiddlers usually start playing around 5:30 pm and finish up around 8:30 pm. No reservations are required, but it's usually quite busy on the nights the fiddlers are performing...so call ahead and reserve a table for a special evening of great music and dining. You can also contact us here...just make sure you give us a phone number and/or email so we can confirm your reservation!
Pianist
Occasionally, we have a local pianist perform on our 1891 Mayson & Hamlin piano. It's a rare and special treat, so be sure to join us during the next performance. Contact us and we'll tell you if we have a performance scheduled.
Special Events in Choteau
We love being involved with our
community here in Choteau. We are always busy with the daily routine
of the restaurant, but we make the time to contribute to these events
since they are very important to us.
Wine Tasting
The Choteau Lions Club is raising money to renovate our public swimming pool. Last year, we hosted a Wine Tasting with Five Course Meal with the help of the Lions. The proceeds from this event are donated to the Lions' pool renovation fund. In 2009, the event is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th. It is held at the Stage Stop Inn, just across the street from the Elk Country Grill. There is seating for 72 people, so get your tickets quick...they sell out fast! Click here to contact us and reserve your seats!
Summer Boxing Smoker
Choteau is world-famous for it's Fourth of July celebration. Our favorite event is the Summer Boxing Smoker, produced by a local boxing promotion company, Front Range Fights. A portion of the proceeds from this event is donated to the Choteau Community Fireworks Fund. The local volunteer fire department coordinates a truly remarkable fireworks display on the evening of the 4th of July...which is the capstone of Choteau's Fourth of July celebration. We like to sponsor at least one of the boxing matches during the Summer Boxing Smoker, and we like to be a part of the action as well. Last year, we assisted the fighters before and after their matches, and coordinated the record keeping for each match. It is great fun being involved...who knows...maybe someday one of us will actually be in the ring, duking it out! Here's how you can find out more information about the Summer Boxing Smoker from Front Range Fights.
Grizzly Marathon
Every August, Grizzly Activity, Inc., a local non-profit fitness-centric organization puts on the Grizzly Marathon. This is a USATF sanctioned race which includes a full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races, as well as a kid's 5K fun run. We are very fortunate to cater the morning breakfast and meals throughout the day for racers, their supporters and the spectators. We can't decide which is a bigger thrill...cheering the racers as they start and finish, or handing them a hot cup of coffee as they are waking up and getting ready to run! If you'd like to be a part of this exciting event either as a runner, supporter or spectator, please visit the Grizzly Marathon website.
